This week we’re spotlighting the Belgian heavy/speed metal outfit Terrifiant in Meet The Band. After a demo last year, they just issued their self-titled debut album. Guitarist ZZ Slop introduces us to his band.
Give us a brief history of Terrifiant.
ZZ Slop: Originally my plan was to just do a 7″ with the Lord and leave it at that as I had some songs that I wanted rid of. It all just snowballed from there when more people heard the tunes and wanted to be involved so I ended up with a band and an album and now people keep asking us to do stuff. Mostly it was my partner in crime who kept pushing me to do it because I was becoming an unlovable cunt and needed to get back to the tunes and myself. Now I’m back to just being a cunt, thankfully.
Describe the songwriting process for your self-titled album.
Easy as fuck! I got the two best guitar players in Brussels and I made one of them play bass, a drummer with endless enthusiasm and the Lord himself. By the time the second album rolls around I’ll be selling the merch.
What will be your strongest memory of the recording of the album?
I can barely remember last week, let alone last year or whenever the fuck it was when we recorded!?
How would you characterize the album’s style/sound?
An anaconda sized line of the finest Colombian bam bam straight down your ear hole!
What lyrical subjects do you cover?
Sex, drugs and rock’n’roll!
How did you come to sign with Gates Of Hell Records?
I got in touch with Cruz del Sur Music and Enrico suggested we do it through Gates of Hell Records, which he is also involved in.
What are your goals and expectations for the album?
Hopefully people get as much fun out of it as we did and I guess maybe a gig or festival here or there!?
What has been your most memorable Terrifiant live show?
Tough call! Either playing to 500+ elite black metal nerds all too cool for school and making them all smile and have fun and drop their weak ass “darkness” personas or that time we played a friend’s tattoo shop and had people packed out the doors and raging in the streets.
What are your upcoming show/tour plans?
At this stage I think we’ve turned down more gigs than we’ve played. Zero plans at the moment, though. We’re all incredibly busy individuals.
How did you get started in music?
My old man put me on the path to ruin and not a day goes by where I don’t thank him for it. His record collection and musical knowledge made me the guitar player I am today. I’ll never be half the man he is but he can’t play a note himself so I kinda win out there.
Who were your early influences and inspirations?
Me aul’ fella, Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, James Hetfield and Soundwave from the Transformers.
What was the first metal concert you attended?
Meatloaf, January 11th 1994 in The Point Depot, Dublin Ireland.
What’s the metal scene like in Brussels?
Seems pretty small and fragmented to me, but people do travel from all over Belgium for gigs and the such, so depending on the band’s attendance does be pretty solid.
What’s currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Corrupted and Hounds mostly.
Anything else you’d like to mention or promote?
I’d like to promote good will and good manners to all humans out there, but most days I just couldn’t be fucking arsed.
