A Killer’s Confession Interview

Matthew Taylor Photography

A Killer’s Confession‘s latest album is just that, a concept record told from the perspective of a killer. Vocalist Waylon Reavis (ex-Mushroomhead) gives us the scoop on Victim 1, tour plans and other topics.

Chad Bowar: Was there anything unique about the songwriting process for Victim 1 compared to your previous albums?
Waylon Reavis: This time we used a different team as we recorded Victim 1. The process was slowed down because lyrically we were writing a concept, and it took more time.

What will be your strongest memory of the recording of the album?
Going down to Nashville and working with Evan (McKeever). we recorded most of the vocals in five days. So it was vocal booth from sunup to sundown.

What was the biggest challenge in its creation?
Writing lyrics was the biggest challenge. Doing a concept is no easy task. I did not just accept anything as done.

What inspired the album’s concept?
I have to give credit where credit is due. The concept for this album came from Andrew Goodfriend, my booking agent.

Are you a true crime aficionado?
No, not really.

How has the band’s sound evolved from Remember?
The band sound has completely changed since Remember. We are using a different team with Evan McKeever and Dusty Boles. We are in a different tuning and writing-wise we went through a whole different process.

How did Aaron Nordstrom (Gemini Syndrome)’s appearance come about, and what did it add to the album?
Aaron has been a long-time friend of mine and I simply just called him and asked one day if he wanted to be on the album. Aaron and I have spoken about wanting to write music for a long time and it was so nice to get to sing with him because he’s such a versatile singer.

How did you come to sign with MNRK Heavy?
I have to give credit again to Andrew Goodfriend for making that connection happen.

What are your goals and expectations for the album?
This album hopefully will help people find us who have not yet. The band has completely re-branded itself. This album is the true sound of A Killer’s Confession.

You filmed several videos for the album. Which was your favorite shoot?
my favorite video we shot for Victim One had to be “Voiced” with Aaron Nordstrom simply because I got to hang out with my friend. We tried not to laugh at each other as we did the video.

How was this year’s Gathering Of The Juggalos?
The gathering was absolutely amazing this year. I was fortunate enough to see a lot of old friends. The fans welcomed me back with open arms. And to be honest, we put on one of the best shows we’ve done all year.

You have a U.S. tour with Drowning Pool coming up. Where haven’t you played live that you’d still like to get to?
I have not yet toured in Europe. I would love to go over there and play my music for people who have never had the chance to see me.

What’s the coolest site/attraction you’ve been able to visit while on tour?
The coolest site we’ve ever been to was by accident and it was in Idaho. it was called Snake River Canyon. We walked outside and just found it.

What are some of your non-musical interests and hobbies?
I love to build Lego sets and collect Harry Potter memorabilia. I absolutely love going to Universal Studios and spending the day walking through the park, taking in all the Harry Potter.
