Back in 2010, Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir was released, with Dave Mustaine chronicling his youth, joining Metallica, the acrimonious exit from that band and the founding and rise of Megadeth. It was an interesting look at a complex man who even though formed what became one of the “Big 4” thrash bands, still was dealing with a lot of issues.
In 2019, Mustaine was diagnosed with cancer at the back of his tongue. His latest book In My Darkest Hour: A Memoir is the story of his journey over the past seven years. Mustaine pulls no punches, detailing the physical and emotional toll of the cancer treatment, which included both radiation and chemotherapy.
In his younger days, Mustaine dealt with addiction and came close to death. But cancer is an entirely different beast. After a life-changing diagnosis, battling the disease itself only a part of the challenge. Confronting one’s mortality and dealing with all the other emotions that come with that is a daunting task.
While the actual treatment is a solitary experience, there is a legion of medical professionals, friends and family lending support and expertise. Many of those people’s voices are part of the book, with sections from family members, bandmates, doctors and others sprinkled throughout. That adds interesting perspective to see Mustaine’s struggles and challenges through the eyes of his wife and kids, how his bandmates like drummer Dirk Verbeuren were dealing with it, and getting some of the medical details from his doctors.
In a very Mustaine-like move, he decided to keep working on Megadeth music at the studio right next to his home throughout the treatment process. That helped him maintain a sense of normalcy even as the treatment was wreaking havoc with his body, and the fact that the cancer was in his tongue/throat made his singing future unclear. He felt an extra burden because the Megadeth machine employs a lot of people, and when the CEO is out of commission, the impact is wide-ranging.
Over the years he has put in a lot of work coming to terms with events of his childhood and younger days, and those tools came in handy for his biggest challenge yet. He developed a tough outer shell for self-protection, but in this book Mustaine takes the reader behind the curtain, showing vulnerability and self-awareness.
In My Darkest Hour is both harrowing and inspirational, with appeal beyond just Megadeth fans. Dave Mustaine went through hell and came out the other side changed, and anyone who has been impacted by cancer can relate to his fight. While the band is winding down with a final album (which hit number one) and tour, Mustaine’s music and story will continue to resonate.
