The New Low are in the spotlight for this week’s Meet The Band. The Utah group includes former members of Hearts and Hands. They self-produced their debut album Continuance. Bassist/vocalist Fletcher Howell introduces us to his band.
Give us a brief history of The New Low.
The New Low is a rock and roll band from Salt Lake City, Utah. We are playing the Vans Warped Tour July 19 through August 13. We released our debut album Continuance on July 22 through Razor & Tie.
Describe the songwriting and recording process of Continuance.
We all live in different states, for the most part. We had a couple ideas getting emailed back and forth while we were separated. Nothing really came together and started flowing as a cohesive writing experience until we all got together. We just locked ourselves in a basement and started writing and recording on our own.
We tracked all of the music ourselves and then went to Stetson (Whitworth, High Vibe Recording) to track vocals. He just gets Garrett and me, and we knew vocals had to happen with him. Making the record just happened so smoothly. The chemistry was just there across the board.
How would you characterize the album’s style/sound?
There are parts of the record that do a lot of rocking. Then there are definitely some parts that do a whole lot of rolling. That’s pretty much the kind of stuff we were going for.
Who are your musical heroes?
Slayer and Coldplay.
What are some of your non-musical interests and hobbies?
Pokémon Go
What’s your all-time favorite album or albums?
That’s a very hard question to answer. Like… really hard. Damn.
Anything else you’d like to mention/plug/promote?
Just Warped and the album right now! We are on Warped Tour from July 19th to August 13th. Our album Continuance is out now via Razor & Tie. We’ll be able to share more soon.
