On their eighth album The Ghost Of A Future Dead, At The Gates pay tribute to their longstanding vocalist Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg as he recorded his vocal takes just before a surgery. However, these ended up being the last takes of his professional life, as he passed away last September after a battle with cancer.
Returning to the fold is guitarist Anders Bjorler, helping to complete the same lineup that recorded Slaughter Of The Soul back in 1995. That leads to a sort of circling back stylistically, especially with the album’s 1-2 punch of “The Fever Mask” and “The Dissonant Void” having a bit of that throwback melodeath vibe. Tompa’s barked vocal approach was always one without equal in this scene and as his swansong it feels like he left it all out there on record.
Towards the middle of the album, “Of Interstellar Death” has guitars that help to really set the mood around Tompa’s vocals with both Bjorler and Martin Larsson feeling like this was recorded 30 years prior with pounding drums from Adrian Erlansson and the ominous bass of Jonas Bjorler buoying the overall sound.
“Tomb of Heaven” begins as if you were entering a church, then you get raided by fast and furious riffs that rain terror upon the listener with their calculated attack. The guitars again provide an excellent foundation and subtlety for the overall album, yet feel inspired and poignant each and every time that they enter the fray.
Entering the final fourth of the album, “The Phantom Gospel” runs through some pounding drums and staccato laced sections to back Tompa’s final frontier followed up by the instrumental “Förgängligheten,” which is Swedish for “transience;” likely referring to the temporary nature of life, in particular that of their now deceased frontman.
Lindberg’s final song on record is “Black Hole Emission.” Closing out an album such as this is a herculean task but one that this track does admirably without trying to do more than it needs to. Every part of the band feels like a well-oiled machine with so much going for it, but only to be cut short by the unpredictable nature of life.
The overall sound here is more consistent than the last few records providing their best record since At War With Reality. We truly lost a great man and musician with Lindberg’s passing, a veritable champion of underground music and pillar of extreme metal. “The Flames Of The End” plays out in celebration, not in mourning. The Ghost Of A Future Dead is a true testament to one of the finest people extreme music has ever churned out.
