The Dallas, Texas black metal group Wyrm Chasm step into this week’s Meet The Band spotlight. They are unleashing their self-titled full-length debut album. Guitarist Eric Carrasco and vocalist/bassist Stephen Jeter introduce us to Wyrm Chasm.
Chad Bowar: Give us a brief history of Wyrm Chasm.
Eric Carrasco: In 2015 I shared two early songs with Stephen, rough scratch guitar demos with drum machine tracks. Stephen had just wrapped up his time with Runes of the Evening and was immediately on board. I wanted to build something melodic and atmospheric within black metal, which was rare in Dallas then. Our band had a few lineup changes over the years. In 2017, Buddy Griffin took over drums, and in 2019 Dale Childs filled in on guitar for a tour and ultimately became our second guitarist.
Describe the songwriting process for your self-titled debut.
Eric: For this album, every song starts with both guitar parts and basic programmed drums. Stephen then writes his bass lines, and Buddy refines or reworks the drum parts to elevate them. Stephen and I handle the lyrics together, and he shapes the vocal patterns to fit the final arrangements.
What will be your strongest memory of the recording of the album?
Eric: The recording process. Driving from Dallas to Austin every weekend to track one instrument at a time, and Val Rozar’s hospitality through it all. After the sessions, we hit local shows and bars around Austin and met some cool people.
What was the biggest challenge in its creation?
Eric: Getting the album done. Some of these songs were written long ago. There were many hurdles along the way that halted the process unfortunately.
How would you characterize its style/sound?
Eric: At its core it’s melodic and atmospheric. The instruments sound melancholic with aggression. A few writing choices that can seem a bit out of the box but overall it does not stray too much from blast beats and tremolo guitars.
What lyrical topics do you cover?
Eric: Themes drawn from philosophy, epistemology, esoteric thought, nature, and human nature.
What led you to go the independent route for the album release?
Eric: We wanted to release the album this year if it meant with or without a label.
What are your goals and expectations for the album?
Eric: We’re releasing the album on vinyl and CD, with a possible cassette run. It’ll be available on all major streaming platforms, and vinyl and CD pre‑orders are already live on our Bandcamp.
Stephen Jeter: I think the goal of releasing this now is to spread our name and attempting to attract the attention of labels and those who can help push us further than we can push ourselves. We’ve created something that we’re happy with and want to share it.
What has been your most memorable Wyrm Chasm live show?
Eric: Most memorable shows for me are a few where people who don’t usually listen to extreme music say the sound genuinely impacted them. At a Dallas show in Deep Ellum, a couple heard us from the street, walked in out of curiosity, and ended up really connecting with the music despite never hearing the style before. Their support afterward stuck with me.
What are your upcoming show/tour plans?
Eric: Right now we’ve got a show on October 24th in Denton with Krigsgrav, Orcanaut, and Tongue of Eden, just one day after the album drops. We don’t have any tour dates lined up yet.
How’s the extreme metal scene in Dallas these days?
Stephen: The scene here is rife with really good bands. Frozen Soul, Power Trip, Creeping Death, Fugitive, Absu and a few others are heavy hitters here. There are bands like Sparrows, Cesspool of Corruption, Nocturnal Spawn, Cognizant are some of them that people should check out. Our shortcoming here is attendance to shows. Unless its a big tour, it can be a challenge to get new faces in the rooms.
What are some of your non-musical interests and hobbies?
Eric: I enjoy reading, and I’ve recently gotten into drawing with colored pencils, creating my own art to display around the house and for my kids. I also spend a lot of time on DIY home‑remodeling projects, especially painting. It’s something I really enjoy, and I hope to eventually do it for others as well.
Stephen: Video games and sports. Video games allow me to get into a different world and relax from the day to day stuff that goes on and both allow me to scratch my competitive itch.
Anything else you’d like to mention or promote?
Eric: I’m glad to finally have our debut album finished, and we’ve already started writing for the next one. I want to take a different approach and give Buddy more room for his own creative ideas. Thanks for the interview and for supporting our music.
